drinkwithlong asked: My gf is interested in yoga. Do you know any renown books on yoga? so many books out there. i'm not sure what's legit or not. Thanks for your help.

Yes it can feel daunting to know where to start: so many options, so many flavors of yoga shouting for attention.

But I would suggest that instead of reading about it she tried experimental classes in different yoga studios. Because reading the menu will not kill your hunger. She will really learn from yoga from reading about it, the same way you won’t feel what ‘s like to run unless she does it.

As for the concern about what’s legit it is important. As any other field in life there are some not legit things under the name yoga. If she goes to a studio where they demand her to push her body too hard, or buy stuff from them only, or by their books only or they say their yoga is the only true yoga or better than everyone else then she should walk way.

In the legits there are different approaches to yoga. They all use the same asanas but some focus in moving form asana to asana quickly (like ashtanga) and other to stay long times in a asana so you learn the details of each asana (like Iyengar). There is no right or wrong here. There is right or wrong for you. Personally I now go into a studio that mixes both approaches. But I have tried different styles over the years and sometimes go to a different class just to try it out.
